Best Snacks to Bring on a Plane With Kids That Actually Work
If there’s one thing I never underestimate when flying with kids, it’s this: the snacks you bring on the plane can make or break your entire travel day.
I’m not being dramatic here.
I’ve boarded flights feeling totally prepared — activities packed, shows downloaded, everything ready — and still ended up this close to a meltdown (theirs and mine)… all because I didn’t bring the right snacks.
Because on a plane, snacks aren’t just food. They’re:
- distraction
- entertainment
- bribery (let’s be honest)
- And sometimes, they’re the only thing standing between you and a very long flight 😅
So over time, I’ve gotten really picky about what I pack.
👉 The best snacks to bring on a plane with kids are simple: easy to eat, not messy, and things your kids will actually eat.
After more than 24 flights with my kids — including delayed travel days and missed nap windows — I’ve figured out which plane snacks are actually worth packing.
The ones that won’t explode into crumbs, won’t get rejected mid-flight, and can buy you a solid stretch of peace when you really need it.
And I swear… there’s one simple snack trick we tried once that my kids still talk about years later — and now expect every time we fly.
If you’re in a rush, these are the ones I keep coming back to:
- applesauce pouches
- dry cereal
- granola bars
- pretzels or chips
- dried fruit
- puffs or mums mums (my kids still eat those!)
- yogurt melts
- cookies (for morale boosts 😅)
- fruit snacks or gummies
The Snack Trick My Kids Still Talk About
When we went to Disney in 2023, I tried something new: I made each of my kids a surprise snack box
And I’m not exaggerating — they talked about it almost as much as the trip when we got back 😂

How I Make a Surprise Snack Box
It’s super easy.
I grab a craft box like this one and fill it with a mix of snacks and treats like:
- cereal
- pieces of granola bars
- pretzels or chips
- puffs
- cookies
- candies
- dried fruit
- yogurt chipits
Nothing fancy — just a mix of things they already love plus a few fun extras.
Now, it’s legit the first thing I pack in their carry-ons!
Why This Works So Well
My kids get SO excited about it.
It became our little tradition. They know they’re not allowed to open it before takeoff.
So they spend the whole time at the airport looking forward to it. Then once we’re on the plane, it keeps them busy for a really good chunk of time.
And the best part? They usually don’t even finish everything.
So it’ll even be useful if you’re dealing with a long connection, a delay, or just a very long travel day!
You’ve still got snacks ready to go.
Always Pack Backup Snacks (Trust Me)
Even with the snack boxes, I always pack extra snacks in both my own carry-on and my husband’s one.
Because let’s be honest… things happen.
Flights get delayed. Kids don’t like the food on the plane (yep, picky eaters over here too). You miss a connection….
Better to be overprepared than stuck with hungry, cranky kids.
What I Pack as Backup Snacks
This is usually what we bring:
- protein bars (for us)
- granola bars
- applesauce pouches
- cookies
And if we don’t eat everything?
Perfect — we keep it for the flight home.
What Makes a Good Airplane Snack for Kids
After doing this so many times, I’ve realized the best snacks are really simple.
They need to be:
✔ easy to eat
✔ not messy
✔ not sticky
✔ not smelly
✔ and familiar
Like all kids, mine are big snackers — and honestly, snacks are just as important as the toys you bring on the plane.
Snacks to Avoid with kids on a plane
We’ve definitely learned some of these the hard way 😅
❌ Anything that melts : Even a small chocolate bar (like the Aero I packed once) can turn into a sticky mess before your kids even get to it.
❌ Anything super crumbly: Skip snacks that break into a thousand tiny crumbs — not fun in a cramped airplane seat.
❌ Candy canes or fragile snacks: I tried this once… they turned into dry little pieces before my kids could even eat them.
❌ Strong-smelling foods: You don’t want to be the one making the whole plane smell like the bottom of the ocean 😅
❌ Brand new foods: Travel day is NOT the time to experiment — stick to snacks your kids already know and like.
Our Simple Snack Routine On Air Travel Days
Over time, we’ve fallen into a simple rhythm:
- snack at the airport (it’s one of the easiest ways to keep your kids entertained at the airport!)
- snack right before boarding
- snack on the plane – but not for like one hour straight… do little snack breaks to keep the fun going!!
- snack during connections
FAQ: Good Snacks for the Plane
Can you take snacks on a plane?
Yes — you can absolutely bring snacks on a plane, including for kids.
Just remember:
👉 you also need to follow your destination’s food rules, not just airport security.
It’s always a good idea to quickly check what’s permitted before your trip so you don’t have to throw food out at customs.
Can you bring liquids on a plane for kids?
Yes — but there are limits.
Liquids (like yogurt, smoothies, or large pouches) usually need to follow the 100 ml / 3.4 oz rule in your carry-on if your kids are over 2.
That’s why snacks like applesauce pouches are great — just keep them small and travel-sized.
If they’re under the age of 2, you can bring liquids for them (milk, water, pouches, purées, etc.). You’ll just need to take them out of your carry-on for the security check.
What food is not allowed in carry-on luggage?
Most solid snacks are allowed, but foods that are:
liquid or gel-like
strongly restricted by your destination (like fresh produce or meats)
may not be allowed.
When in doubt, check your destination country’s food rules before packing.
What is the best way to pack snacks for a flight with kids?
Keep it simple and organized.
Use:
– small containers or snack boxes for variety
– Ziploc bags for backups
– easy-to-access spots in your carry-on
This makes it much easier to grab snacks quickly when you need them.
🚨 Bonus tip: I usually just do a quick Google search for ‘food you can bring into [destination]’ before packing — it takes 2 minutes and avoids surprises.
Make Flying With Kids Feel a Lot Easier
Snacks might seem like a small thing…
But after doing this so many times, I can tell you — they make a huge difference.
They’re the thing that buys you time, resets the mood, and helps everything feel a little more manageable when travel days get long.
And once you’ve got your snacks figured out?
👉 the next thing that makes the biggest difference is what you pack in your carry-on
Because that’s what you’re reaching for when your kid is bored, tired, hungry… or all three at once.
If you want to feel actually prepared (instead of just hoping for the best), this is exactly what I pack every time:
