Paris at Christmas: Why It’s Pure Magic With Kids

Thinking of visiting Paris at Christmas with your kids – but not sure if it’s actually worth it (or doable)? Let me tell you: it’s straight out of a movie. The lights, the markets, the treats… the whole city feels like it’s wrapped up in a sparkly bow just for your family.

We haven’t been on Christmas Day itself, but when we visited in mid-November, the decorations were already up – and wow! We even caught the official kickoff at Galeries Lafayette. That towering tree lit up under the glass dome, the animated windows glowing, and my kids’ faces absolutely lighting up? Core memory unlocked.

We’ve been to Paris a few times now, but it really felt magical during the holidays. So if you’re dreaming of a Christmas trip to Paris and wondering what it’s really like with little ones, I’ve got you. From cozy holiday markets with kid-friendly treats to rides, parades, and sparkling surprises around every corner – here’s everything that makes Paris at Christmas totally magical (and manageable) with kids.

The Lights are Everywhere

Paris doesn’t hold back. From the Champs-Élysées to tiny side streets in Montmartre, everything is decked out in twinkly lights and garlands. Even local cafés go all-in with their decorations. It feels like every street corner is trying to one-up the last.

Mom Tip: Take a short evening walk after dinner to enjoy the lights without sacrificing bedtime. It’s still magical, just with fewer meltdowns.

Galeries Lafayette’s Christmas Tree & Windows – The Star of The Show

If your kids only remember one thing about Paris at Christmas, it’ll probably be this.

Each year, Galeries Lafayette transforms its already stunning flagship store into a Christmas wonderland. Right in the middle of the grand domed atrium, a themed tree (and I mean massive) stretches toward the stained-glass ceiling. It’s not just decorated – it moves, it twinkles, it tells a story. Think glittering spaceships one year, dancing forest animals the next.

And then there are the animated holiday windows outside. Each display is a tiny world – with moving characters, music, lights, and details so intricate even I stood there slack-jawed. Our kids were totally hypnotized, especially by the train and the snowball fight. We had to drag them away with promises of hot chocolate.

Mom Tip: Evenings are special, but I recommend going early in the day (ideally on a weekday). By late afternoon, it’s stroller gridlock and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. And if you can, go upstairs for the view down onto the tree – it’s even more magical from above!

Ice Skating Rinks Around the City

Paris pops up ice rinks in the most charming places – sometimes even on rooftops with Eiffel Tower views. Whether you go for the view of just to let the kids bur off steam, it’s a fun festive break from sightseeing.

Mom Tip: Bring gloves for everyone, and think layers. Paris winters can be damps, and that chill sinks in fast.

Paris Christmas Markets

Paris’ Christmas markets aren’t massive like other famous Christmas markets in Europe, but they’re just as magical.

The Tuileries Garden market is one of the biggest and comes with rides, snacks, and little gift stalls. You’ll also find smaller ones near Hôtel de Ville and Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

When we visited in mid-November, we missed the Tuileries Christmas market by 2 days. NEVER AGAIN. We even witnessed Nutcrackers being unloaded form delivery truck and be installed near the stalls. My heart was broken in thousand of pieces knowing I would miss that truly special Paris Christmas activity.

Mom Tip: Bring a little cash for treats and small souvenirs. These markets are about the vibe, not big shopping hauls.

Christmas Music & Midnight Mass

If you’re in Paris on Christmas Eve, peek into one of the city’s historic churches for music, candles, and family-friendly services. Notre-Dame, Saint-Eustache and La Madeleine are all famous churches which host beautiful celebrations.

Even if you don’t usually do church, the atmosphere is peaceful and magical for kids – a quiet moment in a usually busy trip.

Sweet Treats & Cozy Cafés

Christmas in Paris is basically a dessert marathon. Think roasted chestnuts on the street, thick hot chocolate in the cutest spots, buttery pastries, and bûche de Noël – that famous yule log cake.

Special Events & Holiday Spectacles

On top of all the usual must-dos in Paris for families, here are some Christmas activities you could add to your itinerary!

  • Holiday Concerts Series & Shows: Beyond church concerts, Paris hosts seasonal performances, ballets, and musical productions in theaters and halls across the city.
  • Disneyland Paris Christmas Parade: If you plan a daytrip to Disneyland Paris during your trip, expect a full-on Christmas parade (and magic shows) during the holiday season. It’s not in central Paris, but still a spectacular experience for families.
  • Illumination & Light Festivals: Paris lights itself up – Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Place Vendôme, Montmartre, Jardin des Plantes, Parc Floral – neighborhoods and green spaces get special light installations.
  • Special Exhibitions & Festive Installations: Many museums, galleries, or cultural institutions open holiday-themed exhibits or winter installations. Also, places just outside Paris (Vaux-le-Vicomte) sometimes run special Christmas event programs.
  • New Year’s & Holiday Eve Celebrations: Paris typically has robust New Year’s Eve celebrations, fireworks, special performances, and city-wide lighting for the transition from December to January.

Mom Tip: Check calendars before you go (local tourism sites, Paris event listings). Book concerts, cruises, or shows weeks ahead.

Why Paris at Christmas Works for Families

  • The magic is built-in: You don’t need a tight itinerary – just walking around is exciting.
  • So much is free : Lights, displays, and strolling through Christmas markets don’t cost a thing (and let’s be honest…we always love finding free/cheap things to do in Paris!)
  • Parisians are chill with kids: I know you probably heard the opposite, but that’s what we’ve experienced. Add in the holiday spirit, and the vibe is extra warm and welcoming.

We’ve done Paris in spring and fall, and our November trip is the one our kids still talk about. It feels like Christmas in every sense of the word – even if you’re not there on the the 25th.

FAQ – Family Fun for Christmas in Paris

Does Paris have a Christmas Parade in the city?

Not in the way that many US cities do. Paris doesn’t host a citywide holiday parade. The closest thing is the Christmas parade at Disneyland Paris during its holiday season.

When do the Christmas decorations and lights go up in Paris?

Decorations usually start appearing in mid-November, and by late November to early December, the city is fully lit.

Will attractions be opened on December 24-25?

Many museums and shops either close early (on the 24th) or shut entirely on the 25th. Public transit still runs, but on a holiday schedule. Plan for limited service.
