Is Lisbon a Good Destination For Kids?

Lisbon is an excellent family destination that will appeal to children and adults alike. Portugal’s capital has a number of activities and attractions that are suitable for kids and toddlers (including the magnificent Lisbon Oceanarium). You’ll have no trouble finding something to occupy your days!

The city is lively and safe. You’ll find plenty of grocery shops, pharmacies and restaurants nearby, no matter which district you stay in during your trip. These are all important factors when visiting a new city with your family.

The only thing to bear in mind when travelling to Lisbon with kids (and even grandparents) is the sheer number of hills and stairs. Depending on the age of your kids, bring along a good, comfortable baby carrier to carry your child easily from one place to another. A stroller can also be essential when visiting Lisbon with babies and toddlers. Young children tire more quickly and find it hard to keep up with the pace of going up and down all those hills.

However, it’s important to bear in mind that the city not only has a lot of steep streets, but also a lot of stairs… which isn’t ideal for strollers. Since maps of Lisbon don’t always clearly indicate where the steep hills and staircases are, we sometimes had to carry the stroller up and down the stairs. In some places, you can take a lift, saving you the physical effort!

As an indication, we frequently used the stroller for our 4-year-old daughter while our 18-month-old son was in the baby carrier.

Despite this little geographical challenge, Lisbon remains one of the best European cities to visit with kids.

Overall, Lisbon is a very family-friendly destination. However, some areas are more convenient and interesting for families travelling to Portugal’s capital. Here is everything you need to know to help you decide where to stay with kids in Lisbon:

BAXIA / CHIADO

Baxia and Chiado are the two most central areas to visit Lisbon with kids. The two neighborhoods are filled with restaurants, cafés, bakeries (make sure to grab tons of pastel de nata – a true Portuguese treat – during your trip), shops and historical sites such as the Convento do Carmo and the Santa Justa lift.

Baxia and Chiado are both ideal if you are planning on walking to visit the city.  Most of the streets in the heart of these two neighborhoods are flat (which gives you a welcomed break from walking up and down Lisbon’s hills). Also, some streets are pedestrianised which is perfect for kids – they can walk and run free!

It’s also really close to the Alfama district, a beautiful area with stunning views of Lisbon. It’s also where you can find the famous St. George castle. Alfama is definitely a must on your itinerary in Lisbon: a romantic and authentic district filled with cobblestones narrow streets. However, we would not recommend staying there with young kids, as Alfama is at the top of the hill. Walking in this district for the whole duration of your trip, especially if you have a stroller or young kids walking with you, could be challenging. That’s why we would recommend staying in Baxio or Chiado as they are more accessible for families and add a stop to Alfama for a visit.

During our last trip in Lisbon, we stayed in Chiado and our Airbnb was perfectly located: an easy walk to most of the sites of interest.

Baxia and Chiado definitely meets all the criteria we have for areas where we can stay with our kids.

Where to stay in Baxia/Chiado with kids:

One of the best family-friendly hotel in Lisbon is undoubtedly Martinhal Lisbon Chiado. This hotel is perfectly located and offers everything a family needs while staying in Lisbon. The hotel counts 37 fully equipped individual apartments (including a kitchen and air conditioning). It offers a wide range of services for families: kids club (for kids aged 6 months and older), pyjama club and in-room baby-sitting. We also love that baby gear such as cots, high chairs, baby baths, potties and bottle sterilisers and warmers, is available upon request. It makes traveling with babies and littles ones much easier. The hotel is located at 7 km from Lisbon’s airport.

Belem

Belem is often a favorite when it comes to where to stay with kids in Lisbon. A little bit out of the city buzz, Belem is a perfect location for families. You can enjoy open spaces with views on the river, run around beautiful parks and gardens and visit plenty of history rich sites such as the Monastery of Jeronimos and Belém Tower.

You get plenty of space, but the trade-off is that you are further from the city center animation, restaurants and shops. It truly depends on what you want to do what are the main interests of your visit.

Where to stay in Belem with kids:

The NAU Palacio do Governador is a top choice for a family stay in Belem. You will find a terrace and a garden on the property of this hotel, giving your little one enough space to play. Guests also have access to an outdoor year-round pool and an indoor pool, which will keep you kids busy while at the hotel. To note, if you have a car: the parking is free.

Bonus: breakfast is included and baby cots or rolling beds are available upon request.

Avenida da Liberdade

The Avenida da Liberdade, Portugal’s Champs Élysées, is Lisbon’s most elegant boulevard. You will find designer stores and chic restaurants. It doesn’t sound really kid-friendly, right? BUT, you are only a few steps away from city’s biggest park (Parque Eduardo VII). It’s a perfect location for families travelling with little ones. You can take a daily break in the park so your kids can let off energy and run free.

If you’re planning on walking to visit the city, this are is a great choice as most of the major sights are within walking distance. It’s also a good option for family traveling with a stroller as most of the streets are flats (you’re welcome!).

Where to stay with kids in Avenida da Liberdade:

Our top pick for staying with kids in Avenida da Liberdade is the famous Tivoli Lisboa. It is an affordable 5-stars hotel perfectly located in the heart of the city. Big plus for families: you can enjoy an outdoor pool during summer months, which is rare for hotels in the city.

Cascais

If you are looking for a beach getaway near Lisbon, Cascais is definitely the best option for families. It is one of Portugal’s most scenic destination with many brilliant sandy beaches. This seaside resort is the ideal area to stay with kids in Lisbon to play in the sand and have a little bit of sightseeing. Cascais is a relatively small city, so it is very easy to visit on foot – without any complex commuting logistics. 

Cascais is filled with history and beautiful architecture in one of the prettiest settings. You’ll also find beautiful gardens and parks where you can relax and enjoy a family picnic. White sand beaches are easily accessible and are kid-friendly.

Where to stay with kids in Cascais:

The Sheraton Cascais Resort is an excellent option for families looking for where to stay with kids in Cascais. This five-star hotel is located right outside the city centre (5 km/4-minute drive) and is surrounded by golf courses. One of the main advantages of staying at this hotel is that all suites come with an equipped kitchenette. This way, you get the benefits of staying in a hotel (cleaning service, client service, amenities, etc.), but also the commodity of an apartment (spacious rooms and kitchen).

The hotel has outdoor and indoor pools as well as a playground area for kids.

For families who would like to stay closer to the city centre and beaches, Pestana Cidadela Cascais – Pousada is a great option. This five-star hotel is centrally located, in the arts district, and allows to explore the city easily. It features an indoor pool with views on Cascais marina, as well as an outdoor pool which also has marina views. Guests can enjoy a free breakfast at the Maris Stella restaurant.
